Portland Thorns FC Announce Roster Ahead of 2025 Season

PORTLAND, Ore. (March 12, 2025) – Portland Thorns FC announced today its official roster ahead of their 2025 NWSL Season Opener this Saturday, March 15 at Kansas City Current.

The Thorns will begin their 2025 campaign with 22 active players on their roster, 13 of which are returning faces from the previous year. Amongst those returning is midfielder Sam Coffey (recently designated as Thorns captain for 2025), midfielder Olivia Moultrie and defender Reyna Reyes. Forwards Payton Linnehan, Alexa Spaanstra and Reilyn Turner as well as midfielders Sophie Hirst and Mallie McKenzie are amongst the familiar faces back for 2025.

Eight new players join the Thorns this year, with forward Deyna Castellanos and defender Sam Hiatt headlining the new additions. Forward and MAC Hermann Trophy finalist Caiya Hanks – who was announced earlier today – will be set on making her professional debut this year with Portland alongside forward Pietra Tordin, midfielder Carissa Boeckmann and defender Jayden Perry.

Defenders Kaitlyn Torpey (Australia) and Daiane (Brazil) are two newcomers who will occupy international roster slots alongside the following returning international players: goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold (Australia), defender Isabella Obaze (Denmark), midfielder Jessie Fleming (Canada) and midfielder Hina Sugita (Japan).

2025 will also see the long-awaited return to NWSL action for goalkeeper Bella Bixby after she missed last season out on maternity leave. Goalkeeper Morgan Messner will join Arnold and Bixby to complete Portland’s goalkeeping trio.

The Thorns continue to finalize its roster and there will be additional roster movements made by the club in the coming days.

Players on the season-ending injury list or on maternity leave do not hold an active roster spot for the 2025 season.

The Thorns are set to begin the 2025 NWSL season at Kansas City Current on Saturday, March 15 (set to kickoff at 9:45 a.m. PT on ABC) before returning to Portland for their home opener at Providence Park against Angel City FC on Friday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
