Portland to Paris: Smith notches as an assist for the USWNT; Fleming and Beckie lead Canada into the next round

Australia 1-2 Canada

The United States Women's National Team defeated Mackenzie Arnold and Australia 2-1 in Marseille to finish top of Group B and advance to the quarter-finals at the Paris Olympics. Thorns striker Sophia Smith assisted on Trinity Rodman’s opening goal and Korbin Albert scored the eventual game-winner for the US, who will face Japan in Paris on Saturday. Unfortunately, Thorns midfielder Samantha Coffey received a yellow card and will now miss the quarter-final.

Japan 3-1 Nigeria

Thorns defender Nicole Payne played 45 minutes as Japan secured a spot in the knockout rounds with a 3-1 victory over Nigeria. Maika Hamano and Mina Tanaka scored early to give Japan a 2-0 lead, while Jennifer Echegini pulled one back for Nigeria. Hikaru Kitagawa's strike just before halftime restored Japan's two-goal cushion. Japan will face thethe United States in the next round.

Colombia 0-1 Canada

Portand Thorns players Janine Beckie and Jessie Fleming both got the start as Canada beat Colombia 1-0 on Wednesday. Vanessa Gilles scored midway through the second half, securing Canada's place in the knockout stage after winning all three of their group stage matches. Canada advances as the second seed in Group A and will face Germany on Saturday, August 3.
