Thorns FC Draw 2-2 at Angel City FC

LOS ANGELES, California (Monday, September 23, 2024) – Portland Thorns (8-9-4, 29 points, 7th place) remain above the playoff line with five games left in the regular season, following a 2-2 draw at Angel City. Forward Morgan Weaver and Olivia Moultire netted second-half goals to help secure the road point. 

Angel City jumped out to an early lead when Alyssa Thompson bounced her shot off the post, redirecting the ball into the back of the net. In the 13th minute the Thorns looked to equalize, but Morgan Weaver’s flicked shot was saved by goalkeeper DiDi Haracic. 

Despite numerous opportunities, the Thorns were unable to equalize before the halftime break, heading into the locker room with the one-goal deficit. 

The Thorns were quick to equalize at the start of the second half with midfielder Marie Müller finding Weaver on the run to create an open shot on goal in the 49th minute. The goal marked Weaver’s second of the year and first since returning from injury. 

In the 64th minute the Thorns took the 2-1 lead when Kelli Hubly found herself with the ball near the right sideline. The defender launched a cross into the 18-yard-box, finding Olivia Moultrie who chested the ball down before rocketing off a shot inside the near post. The goal served as Moultire’s fourth of the year, marking a new career best for the 19-year-old midfielder. 

Angel City was able to bring the score level in the 76th minute when Clare Emslie slid into a cross to make it 2-2. Defender Becky Saueberunn nearly had the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute when she lifted a shot towards goal, but a finger-tip save pushed the ball over the crossbar. The match would end shortly after, ending tied at 2-2, with each team walking away with a point.
