Thorns FC quintet named to 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup rosters

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC will see five of its players representing their respective national teams in the upcoming 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup, to be held later this month. Forward Sophia Smith and midfielders Sam Coffey and Olivia Moultrie have been named to the U.S. Women’s National Team, while midfielder Jessie Fleming and defender Reyna Reyes have been selected for Canada and Mexico, respectively.

The tournament is scheduled to run from February 20 through March 11 across four different cities, including at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas and Snapdragon Stadium, Dignity Health Sports Park and BMO Stadium throughout Southern California.

Both the United States and Mexico will compete in Group A, along with Argentina and the Concacaf Preliminary third team. Meanwhile, Canada will compete in Group C, along with Costa Rica, Paraguay and the Concacaf Preliminary second team.

Coffey, Moultrie and Smith will begin their Gold Cup on February 20 at Dignity Health Sports Park against the Concacaf Preliminary third team, while Reyes and Mexico are set to face Argentina later that day from the same venue. Fleming and Canada will begin their campaign at Shell Energy Stadium against the Concacaf Preliminary second team on February 22.

Smith leads the trio of Americans with 15 goals and six assists in 38 appearances, while Coffey has scored one goal in seven matches for the United States. Additionally, Moultrie recently earned her first cap, and subsequent second appearance against Colombia and China PR.

Fleming returns to the Canadian National Team for the first time since becoming a member of the Portland Thorns this past week. With Canada, Fleming has recorded 19 goals and six assists in 123 games.

Reyes has appeared in six matches for the Mexico Women’s National Team, including against Puerto Rico in December of last year.

The top two finishers in each of the three groups along with the two best third-place teams will qualify for the knockout stage, which will commence with the Quarterfinals at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on March 2 and 3, followed by the Semifinals and Final at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium on March 6 and 10, respectively.

The Thorns are slated to begin the season on March 16 against Kansas City Current at CPKC Stadium before returning to Providence Park on March 24 for the home opener against NJ/NY Gotham FC, tickets for which are on sale now.
