Thorns FC Win 2-1 in Concacaf W Cup Clash with Santa Fe FC

PORTLAND, Oregon (Tuesday, October 1, 2024) – Portland Thorns earned a 2-1 win in the third game of the Concacaf W Champions Cup with goals from Izzy D’Aquila and Payton Linnehan on either side of the halftime break.

Forward Izzy D’Aquila nearly opened up the scoring in the fifth minute with an open opportunity on goal, but her shot bounced off the left crossbar. In the ninth minute the Thorns were awarded a penalty kick for a foul on Payton Linnehan inside the 18-yard-box, which D’Aquila placed right up the middle and into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.  Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, the Thorns would only carry the one-goal advantage heading into the halftime break.

Santa Fe’s best opportunity came in the 60th minute when a deep shot forced goalkeeper Shelby Hogan to push the ball over the crossbar and out for a corner kick. The ensuing corner kick saw a near open shot on goal, but again Hogan was able to make the stop.

The Thorns finally doubled the score in the 64th minute when Linnehan pounced on a misplayed ball near midfield. Sprinting towards goal, Linnehan hit a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper to give Portland the 2-0 lead.

Santa Fe pulled one back in the 82nd minute when a poorly taken free kick created an open goal for the visiting side to knock in. The match would end shortly after, giving the Thorns the 2-1 victory.
