SAN DIEGO, California (Wednesday, September 18, 2024) – Portland Thorns dropped a late-game 3-2 result in the second game of the Group Stage in the Concacaf W Champions Cup.
Forward Sophia Smith gave Portland the 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when she found herself with an open shot on goal, slipping the ball underneath the San Diego goalkeeper and into the lower-left corner.
Throughout the remainder of the first half, San Diego would pressure the Thorns’ backline and goal, but several massive saves from Shelby Hogan protected the 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
In the 47th minute San Diego’s Delphine Cascarino curled a shot towards goal, but Hogan rose up, pushing the ball away to prevent the Wave from leveling the score. The Thorns doubled the lead in the 54th minute when Olivia Moultrie hit a low cross to Reilyn Turner for her to slot into the back of the net.
The Wave pulled one back in the 67th minute when San Diego was awarded a penalty kick which Maria Sanchez put away. Just a minute later the Wave equalized with Maria Sanchez heading in a cross from Cascarino.
A second penalty kick for the San Diego Wave in the 85th minute for a hand ball inside the penalty area allowed Sanchez to complete her hat trick, giving the home side the late win.
UP NEXT: The Portland Thorns continue its 14-day road trip with a regular season match against Angel City, on Monday, September 23 at BMO Stadium with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. PT.
